Timeline

Guide: Understanding & Calculating Timeframes (Click to Expand/Collapse)

How to Build the Timeframe

When defining a timeframe for safeguarding planning, it is essential to recognise that this is not an arbitrary decision. The timeframe must be deliberately tailored to the context of each case. Different situations require different durations depending on the complexity of the issues, the seriousness of the risks, and the family’s capacity and support network. A helpful way to establish both the timeframe for safeguarding planning and for the monitoring, testing, and refining phases is to work from a structured review of the danger statements and then develop practical, realistic timelines for intervention. In the planning phase, one of the most important steps is to review the danger statements, which set out the specific harm or potential harm to the child. The number and seriousness of these statements will shape how many sessions are needed to support the family and network in developing safeguarding rules. For instance, in a case involving parent–teen conflict, the practitioner might ask: How many sessions will it take to work with the family and network to create safeguarding rules that address the identified concerns? This decision is critical because it frames the entire planning stage. A practitioner might approach this by estimating, for example, that two sessions are needed to develop all the necessary safeguarding rules for the conflict. If those sessions can be scheduled twice a month, the safeguarding planning phase will take roughly four weeks. If the worker can only meet with the family once a month, the same work will stretch across eight weeks. In this way, the timeframe is shaped by both the complexity of the case and practical factors, such as how often meetings can realistically occur. As a general guideline, sessions of up to two hours tend to work well, as they allow for focused, meaningful work without overwhelming the family or the network.
